The United
Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is
a specialized agency of the United Nations (UN) aimed at
promoting world peace and security through international cooperation in
education, arts, sciences and culture.
The Constitution of UNESCO was signed by fifty
four states on November 16, 1945. The preamble of the Constitution States that
"Since was the minds of men that the defences of peace must be constructed
and that begins in the minds of mean, it is in everlasting peace must be
founded upon the intellectual and moral solidarity of mankind".
The
purpose of the Organisation is to promote collaboration among the nations
through education, science and culture in order to further universal respect
for justice, for the rule of law and for human rights and fundamental freedoms.
The UNESCO is an abbreviation of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.
UNESCO's aim is "to contribute to the building of peace, the eradication of poverty, sustainable development and intercultural dialogue through education, the sciences, culture, communication and information.
The UNESCO was established on 14-11-1946. It had become a Specialized Agency of the United Nations with effect from 14-12-1946. Its Head Quarter is situated at Paris of France.
UNESCO has 195 Member States and nine associate members. Most of its field offices are "cluster" offices covering three or more countries. There are also national and regional offices. There are three main organs of the UNESCO. They are - (i) General Conference; (ii) Executive Board; and (iii) Secretariat.

The membership of the UNESCO is open to all the members of the United Nations. Its organs are - General Conference, Executive Board and Secretariat. The General Conference which consists of the representatives of the member States determines the policy and chalks out the programme of the organisation. The Executive Board consists of eighteen members elected by the General Conference and its function is to carryout the programme adopted by the conference. The Secretariat consists of the Director General and the staff. The Organisations is assisted in its work by various National Commissions. The UNESCO has been brought into relation with the United Nations under an agreement Signed in 1947.
